Melamine faced plywood, otherwise called melamine-impregnated plywood or melamine-coated plywood, is a kind of engineered wood panel with one side or both sides covered with decorative melamine resin. This covering gives a smooth, strong and beautiful surface that is scratch-resistant, stain-resistant and heat-resistant.
To produce melamine faced plywood, several layers of wood veneers are bonded together using a powerful adhesive under high temperature and pressure. The resultant core is then overlaid with a thin layer of melamine resin – which happens to be a thermosetting plastic formed from formaldehyde and melamine. While in the manufacture process the plastic cures creating hard shiny finish that can easily be cleaned and maintained.
Apart from improving its appearance; the functionality of this material is as well enhanced by adding a coat of paint onto it . Thus making it appropriate for many different uses such as furniture making; cabinet work; floor laying among others.
